Mahogany (Swietenia mahogani)

Category Wood

woodsy, balsamic, aromatic

Mahogany is a tree in the meliaceous family. Essentially native to tropical regions, it can grow to a height of approximately 30 yards. This exotic wood is renowned for its pink hue, which veers to brown or deep red with age.

Chips of the wood and bark are steam-distilled. Perfumers are also able to recreate mahogany’s scent using other essences.

Woodsy, velvety, refined… the mahogany note is fairly rare in perfumery. Its fragrance can nevertheless be found as an exotic-wood base note in such fine fragrances as Brit (Burberry), Purple Label (Ralph Lauren) and Euphoria (Calvin Klein).

Mahogany is very fine-grained, precious wood. Used in sculpture, it is in great demand in cabinetmaking, where it is often used for designer furniture.
