No-Drill Rental Fixes? These IKEA Hacks Keep Landlords Guessing
24 october 2026Our rental kitchens and home offices needed storage, but the walls needed to stay untouched. We tested a 14¼-by-22-inch SKÅDIS board, suction baskets, an adjustable rack, and rolling furniture to see which IKEA fixes could leave with us at move-out.
The useful distinction is reversibility. A clamp, suction cup, or rolling cart can protect painted walls, but only when the surface, weight, and installation details match the product.

Clamp SKÅDIS to the Desktop
Our most convincing rental setup starts with a desk, not a wall. The white SKÅDIS pegboard measures about 14¼ by 22 inches, while its connectors clamp onto desktops or shelves up to about 1 15/16 inches thick.
The board still screws to its connectors, but the connectors attach to your furniture. That distinction makes this a genuine no-wall-drilling solution for headphones, charging cables, scissors, and lightweight desk supplies.

Scale the Board to the Workspace
A compact desk can handle the smaller SKÅDIS board without making the work surface feel crowded. The larger version measures about 22 by 22 inches and gives a shared desk more room for containers, hooks, and small shelves.
We would choose the larger board only when the desktop has enough visual breathing room. A typical rental office benefits more from one useful vertical zone than from a full wall of storage.

Build a Cable Landing Zone
Use the lower half of the SKÅDIS board for cables and the upper half for objects used less often. The five-pack of short SKÅDIS hooks is listed at about $3, so the setup can stay inexpensive while keeping chargers off the floor.
Add one matching container for adapters and spare cords, then leave a little open board around it. Empty space makes the arrangement easier to reset when the desk moves.

Hang Lightweight Desk Tools
The SKÅDIS system works best with lightweight objects that already belong near a desk. Pens, scissors, headphones, and a small pair of earbuds are sensible choices; loaded bags and heavy electronics belong on the desktop.
The connectors are listed at about $7 for a two-pack, and the small board is listed at about $19.99. With the short hooks, the listed components total about $30 before tax, delivery, and regional availability changes.

Span the Kitchen Gap with SUNNERSTA
For a backsplash-free kitchen station, place the adjustable SUNNERSTA rack between the countertop and the upper cabinets. Its listed width converts to about 18 inches, and its adjustable height reaches roughly 17¾ to 25⅝ inches.
Measure the opening before buying because the useful feature is the tension between the counter and cabinet, not wall adhesion. The powder-coated steel rack can hold mugs, utensils, and coffee accessories in the space that usually collects clutter.

Choose the Rack, Not the Rail
SUNNERSTA has more than one format, and the distinction matters in a rental. Choose the adjustable rack with hooks, not the similarly named wall-mounted rail, because the rail expects a fixed installation.
We would check the article number before purchasing and compare the product image with the listing. A no-drill plan fails quickly when the wrong version arrives in the box.

Make a Countertop Coffee Station
The SUNNERSTA rack can turn the narrow gap above a coffee corner into usable storage. Hang two mugs from the hooks, keep scoops or small utensils within reach, and reserve the counter below for the coffee maker.
IKEA lists a maximum load of about 9 pounds per hook, which converts to roughly 9 pounds. That figure applies to each hook, not necessarily to the rack as a whole, so keep the setup light and avoid hanging cast-iron cookware.

Keep the SUNNERSTA Station Reversible
Leave the countertop and cabinet faces clean before setting the adjustable rack in place. A thin layer of dust, grease, or uneven contact can make any tension-based organizer less reliable.
Our preferred rental setup uses the rack for removable objects only. Do not treat it as a permanent shelf for heavy dishes, and remove it before moving day so the cabinet edges can be inspected easily.

Suction TISKEN to Smooth Tile
The TISKEN basket is a practical choice for smooth tile, a suitable mirror, or glass. Its listed size converts to about 11 inches wide by 6¾ inches deep by 6¾ inches high, giving small toiletries or kitchen supplies a defined landing place.
The US listing shows a price of about $8.99 and a load rating of up to roughly 6½ pounds. Press the suction cups onto a clean, smooth surface and keep the basket away from textured paint or porous stone.

Move TISKEN Into the Kitchen
TISKEN does not have to stay in the bathroom. IKEA describes the series for kitchens and other rooms with an appropriate smooth surface, so a tiled backsplash can hold sponges, brushes, or sealed packets without a screw hole.
Keep anything that could leak inside a small container first. The basket is most useful when it holds lightweight daily supplies, not a collection of full glass bottles.

Use TISKEN on a Mirror
A bathroom mirror can provide a second storage zone when the vanity is narrow. Place TISKEN to one side rather than directly in the sightline, then use it for hair ties, travel-size bottles, or a small grooming brush.
We would avoid placing the basket above an electrical outlet or directly over a sink full of water. Suction storage is reversible, but its position still deserves the same care as any item mounted near plumbing.

Roll Storage Beside the Counter
Small rolling furniture solves a different rental problem because it adds storage without asking the room to accept a fixed installation. An IKEA RÅSKOG cart can hold pantry extras, cleaning supplies, or craft materials and move out of the way when the room needs to change function.
Keep the cart below the counter line when possible, and use its top for objects that need daily access. A rolling piece earns its space when it can leave the kitchen, not when it becomes another permanent obstacle.

Inspect Every Fix Before Move-Out
“No drilling” does not automatically mean “no damage.” Suction cups can lose grip, clamps can mark a soft desktop, and tension organizers can rub against cabinet edges if they are overloaded or left in place too long.
One IKEA rental-friendly guide even includes a top-of-door screw attachment, which is a reminder to read the installation details instead of trusting the marketing label. Photograph the wall, counter, cabinet edges, and furniture before installation, then remove every system early enough to clean and inspect the surfaces.
