Moss, humus-earthy, woody.

Source

True oakmoss comes from lichen which grows on the trunks and branches of oak trees (quercus robus). Oakmoss is native to Europe and North America. The lichen is collected in Europe and especially in Macedonia and Bulgaria.

Extraction Method

Concretes are obtained from the moss through extraction with solvents and absolutes are extracted from the concrete using alcohol. The extraction process is practiced mainly in France. There are several different varieties of lichen used for their aromatic qualities; these come for the most part from cedar trees (Morocco), pines and fir trees (France). Extracts are not as refined as the real oak moss, but they are often combined.

Uses

The concrete is used in soaps and the absolute in fine perfumery in fougere, chypre, woody or oriental compositions. Oak moss brings a richer dimension to perfumes.

History

The oak tree has historically been the most venerated of trees. For the Greeks, it was the original tree from which humanity sprang, so they dedicated it to Zeus. The Romans dedicated it to Jupiter.
