Ambergris (Physeter Macrocephallus)

Ambergris is gathered in New Caledonia. It settles on the shore with alluvial deposits.
Ambergris, not to be mistaken with yellow amber (fossilized resin of plant origin), is a sperm whale secretion. Sperm whales produce it to protect their stomachs from the beaks of the cuttlefish they swallow. Once released, it must stay in the waterfor a long while before developing its characteristic odor. Ambergris is used in herb teas and dyes. Nowadays it is mostly replaced by a synthetic version.
Mostly used in fine perfumery.
As ambergris is rare and expensive, other raw materials are often used instead.
Ambergris, a sought-after product, has been traded in Africa since 1000 B.C. It was counted among North Africa's luxury goods, along with black slaves and gold.
One of the biggest pieces ever found was sold in London in 1913: it weighed over 336 pounds.
Ambergris strengthens desire and perseverance: its aphrodisiac qualities are well known.
