JUNIPER SLING

Olivier Cresp shakes up a Juniper Sling!
Report by Anne-Sophie Schmitt

For this cold, rushed season, Penhaligon’s has come up with a cocktail with a delightfully old-fashioned British feel that you can indulge in to your heart’s content! Juniper Sling, like a vibrant tribute to the Roaring Twenties, is a paean to intoxicating frivolity inspired by the most famous of English alcohols: London Dry Gin!
Enjoy this juniper-berry-based olfactory cocktail dreamt up by Olivier Cresp. It’s a perfect example of authentic tradition with a dash of British modern. Inside a classic exterior – the house’s signature bottle is graced with a silvery label and has a matching metallic ribbon around the neck – Juniper Sling flaunts its decadently offbeat personality by jazzing up its spicy, woody and aromatic facets with addictively gourmand notes.
With gallantry and a dose of British eccentricity, Penhaligon’s latest eau de toilette swings open the exclusive doors to the private club where it was created…

It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that Juniper Sling!

Back when flappers had boyish haircuts and noble young chaps wore tweed jackets, London’s golden youth swung to jazz rhythms. With Juniper Sling, the Roaring 20s are making a comeback, bringing you the care-free atmosphere of private clubs, Bright Young Things’ “bath & bottle” parties, nostalgia for gin palaces serving gin & tonics, gin fizzes and other intoxicating cocktails!
Back then, gin was like white gold. The little black berries from Holland had a come a long way since the 17th-century battlefields, inspiring the first cocktail bars and becoming the star of London cocktail parties.
With Juniper Sling, it’s impossible to be serious! Instead of flaunting masculine or feminine traits, Juniper Sling stands in favor of olfactory emancipation. Olivier Cresp has signed a liberated fragrance with a strong character, free of gender issues or complexes! Gentlemen will enjoy how the juniper berry’s dazzling freshness contrasts with the spicy warmth of brandy and the nobility of dry woods. Ladies will fall for the sweetness of cinnamon and the elegance of iris wood intertwined with a smoothly sensual gourmand trail with accents of brown sugar and black cherry. The whole strikes an unexpected balance, as well flaunting a fluidity that reinvents the codes of unisex fragrances…

From the perfumer’s workshop to the bar of the Plaza Athenée Hotel…

Born to a family in Grasse, France’s perfume capital, Olivier Cresp was raised in a culture of respect for mythical ingredients. He happily describes his own perfume-design style as figurative. “What matters most of all to me is the concept; then comes the style – mine is fairly straightforward, minimalist and authentic; then technique comes in to raise the fragrance to the next step.” In creating Juniper Sling, the idea was to explore the olfactory world of cocktails – which was incredibly inspiring!” A fabulous occasion for Olivier Cresp to express his talent through exceptional ingredients, “nothing was off-limits,” as he likes to point out, and a good dash of originality…
Taking natural juniper essence – with its complex combination of sweet, bitter and resinous notes – as his starting point, he managed to reconstitute the smell of gin and to release an instantly addictive note that creates an illusion of the past with a single spray! Like a musician vibrating to jazz standards, Olivier plays with tonalities that are spicy, woody, fresh and warm all at once, to create an intense and memorable scent.
Truly the work of a master–perfumer, caught the attention of Thierry Hernandez, inventor of bold cocktails and director of the sumptuous bar of the Plaza Athenée Hotel, in Paris… Inspired by the perfumer’s formula, the star mixologist decided to invent a brand-new cocktail in honor of the fragrance’s launch. From cocktail to fragrance and back again, Juniper Sling will enchant both your nose and your palate. Cheers!

Juniper Sling, available at all Penhaligon’s sales points since September 12, 2011 and on the permanent cocktail menu of the bar of the Plaza Athenée, 25 Avenue Montaigne 75008 PARIS.
