3 - ITALY’S NATURAL MUSES
Warmed by an intense sun under an azure sky, particularly in the South, Italy, a land surrounded by crystalline waters and untamed isles, has engendered vegetation both exuberant and delicate. Veramenteitaliani fragrances always integrate notes representing the flora of the country, with, first among them, Sicilian citrus fruits: tangerine, orange, bergamot (Citrus Bergamia can also be found in Calabria), lemon (il limonemade the reputation ofSorrente, too) and citron. Thanks to its very mild climate, these energizing fruits are also cultivated on the Amalfi coast. Colonia Acqua di Parma, Sicily (Dolce&Gabbana), Incensi (Lorenzo Villoresi), Armani pour Homme and Eau de Jade (Armani Prive) all open with the frizzante freshness of Sicilian citrus.

Two flowers have near-mythical status in Italy: TuscanIris ( Iris Florentina), to which Iris Nobile by Acqua di Parma pays homage, and Parma Violet, the very first flower to blossom as winter draws to a close. The emblem of the city of Parma, chosen by Marie-Louise of Austria, Napoleon’s second wife, violet was also the flower of predilection of the celebrated 19 th-century actress Eleanora Duse. A rival of Sarah Bernhardt, she was famous for her portrayals of the lyric works of writer Gabriele d’Annunzio, with whom she lived a great passion. At the request of the organizers of an exhibit dedicated to “la Divina” in Rome in 2005, Laura Tonatto created E.Duse, an olfactory interpretation of the great actress’s artistic and personal temperament.
THE ISLES OF FASHION DESIGN
Southern Italy offers the greatest sources of inspiration to designers of fragrance, fashion and luxury in general. The South is its islands, with their untamed beauty, emerald sea and odoriferous botanical Edens. Which is why they are such an idyllic setting for inspiration. Giorgio Armani chose the Isle of Pantelleria, mid-way between Sicily and Tunisia, as did the creators of the Profumi di Pantelleria brand. In the wake of the neo-realist film Stromboli, by Roberto Rossellini, Dolce&Gabbana have owned a splendid villa on this volcanic, wild land for many years. Wanda Ferragamo is attached to Capri, as is signorValentino, who has taken refuge on his yacht Il Blu to preserve his tranquility. Capri is also tied to the name of Emilio Pucci, who presented his first collection there in 1949, in his boutique Canzone del Mare (The Song of the Sea). His daughter Laudomia brought the brand home, with a boutique on Via Camerelle.
