Southern Italy preserves another legendary medieval olfactory site, Carthusia, in Capri. The story goes that in 1380, in honor of a visit from the Queen of Anjou, the Prior of Saint James Chartreuse picked the island’s most beautiful and fragrant flowers. The eau that resulted from their maceration was so exquisite that the Prior, with the help of an alchemist, tried to reproduce it. Thus was born the first perfume from Capri. The forgotten formula was rediscovered in 1948 by the Prior of the monastery, who, with the Pope’s permission, revealed it to a chemist. And the antique perfumery known as Carthusia, The Chartreuse, the smallest perfume laboratory in the world, was reborn. Here, each fragrance tells a story, inspired by Greek mythology, local plants or flowers.
Fans’ favorites are Aria di Capri, Mediterraneo, Io Capri, Ligea la Sirena, Fiori di Capri, and Carthusia Uomo. The last two also come in a Limited Edition version, in an imposing, 25 fl. oz. engraved gold and palladium bottle nestled into a box with a numbered certificate accentuating the product’s prestige. A fragrant new collection for the home, Domus Carthusia, was launched recently, with two lines, C’Era et Note, evoking the atmosphere of the sea.
