Essences : Fruity New Sensations

To attract consumers, brands are unveiling fruity new sensations bursting with imagination. In women’s scents, any fruit goes. Berries (black currant, red currant, raspberry) are in, as are exotic notes (passion fruit, guava, mango, litchi). Whether discreetly or center stage in musky-floral accords, their notes bring cheer, charm and a ray of sunshine. Apple, pear, peach and other tree fruits also make perfume designers’ day. Among the fruity notes whose stock is rising: rhubarb, with its fruity, green scent (ck one summer 06 / C Klein), pomegranate (Envy Me/ Gucci) and persimmon (Euphoria (C Klein). Then there are the rare, exotic citrus fruits like kalamanzi, with its lemony, fruity scent (Black XS/ Paco Rabanne), zesty, energetic yuzu, (Love L’Eau pour Homme/ Kenzo, Pink Tonic/ Azzaro) and sparkling, aromatic kumquat (Lauren Style/ R Lauren). In the latest women’s scents, fruity waves can also come from fruit-tree blossoms, such as cherry blossom, pear blossom or rarer blooms, like osmanthus, whose fragrance develops velvety-smooth apricot accents. The keynote in Osmanthe Yunnan (Collection Hermessence d’Hermès), it’s also one of the main ingredients in Ultraviolet (Paco Rabanne).

To invent fruity new emotions, perfumers also offer notes with innovative liqueur, pulp and sherbet textures! Men’s fragrance Lacoste Red (‘Style in Play’) reveals a frosted-apple liqueur. Fruit pulp has pride of place this season: fig in l’Eau au Thé Rouge (Bulari), peach in For Her eau de parfum (Narciso Rodriguez) and apricot in Eau d’Energie (Biotherm). Last but certainly not least, Miss Dior Chérie (Dior) innovates with an enticing strawberry-sherbet note. Sherbet-note fans will be delighted by the Comme des Garçons brand’s Sherbet line, with its tempting waves of frosty scent…

Fruit as Inspiration for Bottle Design
Revealed by Dior with Poison (and reprised by Tendre, Hypnotic and Pure Poison),  apple is a  fetish for fragrance designers. In a purple hue, clad in golden ivy leaves, it cradles designer Lolita Lempicka’s  off-beat perfume. The apple would seem to be an obvious reference to the forbidden fruit offered to Eve by the snake. Aside from its playful shape and rounded curves, the fruit calls to mind the original object of temptation, materializing the fragrance it contains. For that matter, designer Joop even christened his apple bottle All about Eve! An apple is also the playful container for Donna Karan’s Be Delicious, but in this case, it evokes both a lust for life and the Big Apple, the universal nickname for the designer’s beloved New York City.
Other brands have also chosen fruit shapes for their bottles. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Premier Figuier, L’Artisan Parfumeur launched a fig-shaped collector’s edition, dreamt up by Pierre Dinand. As for the jeweler  Cartier, for his new fragrance Délices, he chose a generous berry shape, as multi-faceted as a gem.
