Faraway Fragrances

Travel is another theme that has inspired fragrance designers. Figurative, brut or sensorial, blending unusual essences and faraway cultures. Dzongkha for example, from L’Artisan Parfumeur, invites men and women to discover Bhutan. A smoky woody scent with leather and spice inflexions, punctuated with a note of milk tea, a local tradition. At Hermès, Paprika Brasil joins the Hermessence collection. A new olfactory voyage after last year’s Osmanthe Yunnan invited us to discover China. All of Asia is found in Kenzo’s Amour, from Japanese cherry blossom to rice and white tea notes. Last but not least, in its L’Art & la Matière collection, Guerlain proposes ‘Bois d’Arménie’. A bewitching trail reminiscent of the wisps of smoke rising from the famous ‘papier d’Arménie’ for this major woody, sensual scent, trimmed with benzoin, frankincense and copahu balm.

Eau Emotionnelle

Sweet and Sassy
To attract attention, new fragrances drape themselves in surprises and sometimes even impertinence. Rumeur by Lanvin, for instance, has an assertively offbeat communication campaign. A stunning, rebellious icon accentuates the fragrance’s stylized name, in uneven, seemingly handwritten copper letters. Impertinence is in the spotlight at Guerlain, too. Like at Lanvin, the tone is set from the get-go, with the fragrance’s name: Insolence. Insolence, is an ‘intrepid smile that’s not afraid of anyone or anything (…) a showy style and a stunning, over-the-top purple hue for an asymmetrical bottle as bold as you please. Even more provocative, but glamorous too, the British brand Agent Provocateur presents Eau Emotionnelle. A spicy, sexy, libertine eau spiked with pink pepper, sensual woods and osmanthus, worth a look while you’re waiting for the international release (*) of the seductive scent Maîtresse.

Other fragrance trends and rendezvous
The color purple is still holding its own this year. In Miracle Forever (Lancôme), it evokes a city by night; in Cuir Ottoman (Parfum d’Empire), it reinforces the silkiness of an iris-and-amber leather scent; in Emporio Remix (Armani), it evokes femininity and musical rhythm, and in Purplelips (Dali), it stands for seduction and voluptuousness.

Among the season’s other olfactory rendezvous, for women, Sonia Rykiel proposes ‘Belle en Rykiel’, a refined, sensual-aromatic floral scent, and Dolce & Gabbana presents ‘The One’. For men, there’s Bulgari Pour Homme Soir with its waves of Darjeeling tea, amber and bergamot.

Among the more discreet launches… After Fleur d’Oranger 2005, L’Artisan Parfumeur proposes a second vintage fragrance: Fleur de Narcisse 2006. Like a great wine in which the flower reveals thoroughbred notes of blond tobacco. Book and film fans will be sure to want to know more about the “Perfume” collection. Presented by Thierry Mugler, it proposes 15 olfactory compositions inspired by the book ‘Perfume’ by Patrick Süskind, coming to a theatre near you this fall.
