New Ingredients: Mineral & Atmospheric Trends

Recent technological advances allow fragrance to explore new creative concepts that had never been considered before. Thanks to the recent expeditions to Mars and Venus that took place in early 2056, minerals and atmospheric ethers are the two latest trends.

One of them, Aryx ® is a red-earth extract with a fairly unusual fragrance. Rich in iron oxides, this ultra-light mineral develops a metallic-amber scent that brings a new dimension to woodsy and Oriental fragrances. As for Vulkalium ®, discovered preserved inside a several-million-year-old lava field, it is a fine, gray-blue powder whose fragrance evokes both the scent of horses, and of ink, a compound that was once used for writing.

In addition, scientific research has led to the discovery of new chemical elements, including galaxium and odysium, two colorless gases whose scents can be captured under highly specific atmospheric conditions. The former possesses a minty, peppery flavor with an incandescent, almost electric freshness. The latter develops a fine, intense note evoking both salt and linden-tree sap. These two compounds, which are quite costly to produce on Earth, can nevertheless be found in several recently released luxury creations.

Back-to-Nature Designers

The other trend, which has been in vogue for several years now, is for ecology and bio-diversity. Sales of the ‘Forests Collection’, the new olfactory library from ‘Senses & Essences of the World’, have been sky-rocketing. This unisex line includes 16 creations faithfully reproducing the scents of our planet’s many different varieties of tree bark. The line’s bio-mixity lets you choose between splashing it on your skin or spraying it directly into the atmosphere. The brand has just signed an agreement with ‘The House of Coffees and Teas’, the talented and flourishing cooperative that has been promoting Fair Trade on a global level for more than twenty years now. These brands’ strong showing is perfectly in tune with consumers’ heightened awareness of new organic fragrance and skin-care lines.

Fragrance designers’ creations are all becoming more environmentally aware, especially since the Kyoto 3 protocol was signed. Adding certain odorless compounds to the fragrances’ formulas ensures total biodegradability after one year. In addition, the recent discovery of new plant-based musks make fragrances longer-lasting; now just a few drops suffice...

Frozen Flowers

The climatic thaw that has been increasing over the past decade has led to the rediscovery of certain plant species that were completely extinct. A genetic analysis, performed thanks to a technique christened Genessence ®, has allowed for the reconstitution of several root-stocks, which have been reintroduced into their natural environment. Thanks to this new process, perfumers have obtained essential oils that were believed to have disappeared.

Last year, this technique was also used to recreate the scent of both a wild-cherry tree and a red lily that had been hybridized by Catherine de Medici’s gardener in the 16 th century. Their stunning scents can be found in the prize-winning ‘Forgotten Gardens’ line, whose incredible performance was acknowledged by an award from the Fragrance Foundation!

Essences Alive!

Those who have been hoping for a fragrance that would change with the weather, their mood or the intensity of the sun are about to see their wish come true. Scientists’ and perfumers’ concerted research efforts have led to the development of a totally new technique for extracting plant essences: Living-Flower ®. This innovative and absolutely ecological process captures the flower in its living state, and allows the essence’s aroma to evolve over the course of the day. And the flower causes the entire fragrance to evolve as well, in response to the time of day, the light, or the emotional state of the person wearing it. Studies are currently being performed to apply the Living-Flower technique to the fragrance of humus from the tropical forest and the sands of the Atacama desert. In the near future, we can surely expect to be surprised and entertained by these new fragrances, which will provide a new expression of our planet’s flora…
