Born in 1952, Jean-Paul Gaultier started his fashion career at the houses of Pierre Cardin and Jean Patou. He launched out on his own in the late 70s and achieved la consecration in the 80s, with a style pairing a sense of humor and a taste for provocation. He has designed a great number of costumes for stage and screen, most notably Madonna’s concert costumes. Echoing the fetishistic lines of a bustier, his first perfume, ‘Classique’ was launched in 1993, followed 2 years later by the men’s fragrance Le Mâle, an enormous international success. The brand’s other creations include: Fragile, Gaultier² and Fleur du Mâle. One of the rare designers to dared to show men in skirts on the runway, he is also the first to have launched a make-up line specifically aimed at men. Jean-Paul Gaultier is a bit of an ‘enfant terrible de la mode’.
