The birth of American niche perfumery (part 3) : Seven Skies

by Karen Dubin, founder of Sniffapalooza

As you can probably tell, I'm attracted to fragrance lines that have a theme or story. I feel this imagery really contributes to helping the consumer understand the conceptual ideas of the perfumer and makes the whole act of wearing the perfume that much more meaningful and enjoyable. Seven Skies is such a line - colored by exotic and spirited cities of the world with notes that evoke destinations near and far.
Seven Skies was founded by the international team of Canadian creative director Phoebe Ellis, who partnered with Czech designer Radim Malinic and young rising-star perfumers Natasha Cote, also Canadian, and Irina Burlakova, from Latvia. They all live in the U.S. now, and together the group has collaborated with the goal to produce innovative luxury fragrances inspired by world travel, a shared passion, and it was important to them to create a line by young people for young people.

Also paramount to them was the use of color, which they saw as a lacking area in the contemporary fragrance world. So they set out to design fragrances that were different from what was readily being made, and with bright and vibrant packaging which perfectly showcased the evocative juice within.
Seven Skies has started with four fragrances, with plenty of ideas and influences for future additions to the line. Belle Histoire, which means 'beautiful story', is a tribute to Paris and was inspired by the song ‘Une Belle Histoire’ by French artist Michel Fugain. It is a floral-gourmand with fresh spring leaves, lilac, muguet, white chocolate, and creamy pistachio.

Chelsea Girls is a fragrance devoted to the fashionable and fun-loving girls of London, as well as a reference to the Andy Warhol film (Chelsea Girls, 1966). This modern chypre includes notes of apricot, peony, rose, cassis, patchouli, and amber.
Free Love, the fragrance shaped by Ko Pha Ngan* island refers to the powerful friendship that develops and evolves between travelers during their journeys. It is a marine floral scent with notes of champaca**, exotic fruit, coconut water, black pepper, and night-blooming jasmine.

The fourth fragrance, Lalita, is a floral woody scent that includes chai spices, citrus, sandalwood, tuberose, incense, vetiver, and patchouli. Why such a name ? Lalita is the Hindu goddess of bliss and beauty. She also symbolizes Hardiwar, one of the seven holiest places in India.
Next time, we’ll talk about YOSH OLFACTORY SENSE…
