When I started writing about the scent of Brazil, some verses of a traditional and popular Brazilian song had kept on my mind: “Brasil meu Brasil Brasileiro... vou cantar-te nos meus versos” (“Brazil, my Brazilian Brazil… I’m going to sing you in “my verses”). These verses, part of the song Aquarela do Brasil (Brazil watercolor) from Ary Barroso, famous samba singer, poet, artist, a soul in an eternal body were intimate while my writings were shaped. It was as if the lyrics would leave the paper leaves and become a perfume through the smoke, also untouchable like the music, however having the priceless value of existing in the most primitive and fascinating of the senses, the olfaction. And these verses emphasize Brazil. It is not any Brazil but the Brazilian Brazil. Brazil whose adjectives are founded by the roots of the land which only would be qualified as simply itself and, now, as a good Brazilian, I am thinking of the scent of my land. As well as the watercolor has its joyful and lively colors, the scent of Brazil has various facets of an identity that is so multiple and unique, from North to South of this giant land, home of almost 200 millions. It has the joy, the beauty, the naturalness, the seduction, the energy, the simplicity, the magie and, much more, the diversity of people that embrace the world, captivating people globally with the fascination of an extraordinary culture, grabbing the attention of a perfume industry that grows year by year. Recently, Brazil is the second market of perfumery in the world with a global participation that overcomes the total of 13% besides is leader in perfumery in Latin America, a region in developing growth with opportunities to expand new businesses in fragrances. But, with the growth of the Brazilian Perfumery, what is the true scent of Brazil? I would say that is an answer sensorially full of nuances that starts from the experience of each one with the richness of Brazilian culture. Brazil is full of scents as well as endless opportunities in fragrances which the perfumery art has. These experiences are revealed and converted into unique fragrances by perfumers that research raw materials and new combinations between olfactory compounds, as well as others professionals in the industry that have dedicated to know Brazilian scents that enchant consumers in colder regions of the South as well as in the Northeastern hot weather, from consumers in urban cities to countryside places. There are no limits because Brazil follows the olfactory global trendies from consumer habits as any country in the world, however there is a richness of values, be it in raw materials be it in Brazilian People that move the perfumery to find the true fragrant treasure. |
