It looks like the latest symbol of elegance in perfumery might be ribbons. More and more brands have been going for them lately. Over the past few years, ribbons have entered the world of perfume as a luxury version of the tester strip. Offered by brands like Hermès and Narciso Rodriguez, the tester ribbon tied around the customer’s wrist combines elegance and efficiency (persistence for the perfume and visibility for the brand). Lately, ribbons have been accessorizing a lot of bottles, too. Following in the footsteps of trendsetters like Agent Provocateur and Lanvin’s Rumeur, ribbons are everywhere this season: Chloé, le b. (Agnès b.), Givenchy’s “vintage harvest” collection, Réminiscence’s do ré and mi fa, and more. Sometimes the ribbons are tied loosely around the neck of the bottle, other times they’re presented more formally, like a nod to the traditional “baudruchage” method of sealing perfume bottles to prevent evaporation (Lanvin, Givenchy). For couturier Max Mara, the wide, gray satin ribbon, hand-tied around the bottle and the cap is practically the bottle’s signature.
