‘Green’ products: the scents could stand some improvement

Date: 05.05.2008

Detergent, household cleansers, cosmetics: “green” products are in, but their scents aren’t always up to snuff. Still fairly rare, EcoLabel certified detergents are undoubtedly worth keeping an eye on, but compared to traditional detergents, something’s not quite right when it comes to their scents. It’s because so many ingredients are restricted in order to be eligible for the label. So it isn’t always easy for perfume designers to explore new creative paths with a limited palette. For household cleansers, eco-certified brands tend to go for notes like orange, lavender, aromatic herbs and eucalyptus. Certified cosmetics try to get beyond that range, which, though natural, can come across as a bit passé or just not all that nice. The organic fragrance offer is still pretty limited, but new arrivals are trying to get beyond the trio of old stand-bys, lavender, citrus and aromatic herbs. Another problem for these fragrances is their long-lastingness… or rather their lack of it.
