Comme des Garçons’ many fragrant collaborations

Date: 11.02.2009

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed the niche perfume brand Comme des Garçons diversifying their olfactory offer. Fans of the brand’s fairly unusual scents include creators and designers that had no scent of their own. The most recent collaboration was with the Finnish furniture company Artek. The gentle, understated fragrance, with a Cologne feel to it, suits the spare, natural lines of Artek’s furniture. C.D.G. signed their first 2 collaborations in late 2008. With the hat designer Stephen Jones, they came up with a sparkling, aldehyde-inflected violet scent presented in a hat-box shaped package. For the magazine Monocle, C.D.G. came up with Hinoki, a fragrance redolent of the wood from the Japanese tree of the same name. They are currently working on another scent with Monocle. This fall C.D.G. reinforced their fragrance collaboration by working with Irishwoman Daphne Guinness: fashion icon, celebrity, heir to the Guinness family fortune… and fan of Comme des Garçons’ couture and perfume collections. Which is how the perfume Daphne (a tuberose oriental) came to be. The process was similar for Stephen Jones. He and C.D.G. go way back (the hat-maker works with the couture brand for their runway shows). So there may well be other olfactory collaborations with designers or celebrities down the line, the brand confides… but only if there is a real complicity, as there was with Daphne Guinness and Stephen Jones. A partnership with another designer is already in the works. Once reserved for those in the know, Comme des Garçons Parfums is now breaking out with myriad fragrant collaborations.
