Sir Terence Conran

This great English designer has just celebrated his 70th birthday. He has achieved unprecedented success: in 1964, he opened his first Habitat store in London, followed by dozens around the world. In 1973, he founded the Conran Shop and set up stores in several big cities. He also opened several restaurants and hotels. In his London workshop, he continues to invent "simple and useful" objects, just the way he likes them.

What permfume are you wearing today?

Aqua di Parma, a very old Cologne.

What was your first fragrance?

Household soap. Men's fragrances did not exist in England back then. Until 1967, after-shaves did not exist in our country! If they did, only homosexuals used them.

What fragrances did your parents use?

None. Probably like all children, I found that my mother's skin smelled delicious.

Are there any particular smells that evoke memories?

Apple tree log fires remind me of my childhood. Cigars: I am very fond of Cuban cigars, they are very often associated with great moments. I bought an old boarding school building in England to convert it into a house. It smells of panties!

Which smells do you dislike?

The smell of Mac Donald's. The cheap smell of some incense and curio shops. Synthetic and artificial smells. Cat odor. A few years ago, I lived in a building. My neighbor owned 20 cats. How dreadful!

What are your favorite smells?

Blooming wisteria in front of my house in the beginning of summer. I also like the smell of greenhouses with the mixture of heat and humidity. I like the flavor of white and black truffles, great Burgundy wines, cheeses such as "Epoisse", and I like the flavor of a baked chicken. Actually I like all mouth-watering smells.

Do you wear different kinds of Cologne?

All natural Colognes: lavender Colognes, orange blossom Colognes, rose-based Colognes.

What fragrance do you like to smell on others?

The smell of cooking! On my wife, 1000 by Jean Patou.

What do you do at the moment?

On the occasion of my birthday, I redesigned about fifty objects and pieces of furniture and made a book on them and set up ambulant exhibitions in my stores: "Plain, Simple and Useful." After Paris, it will go to New York, then Japan
