Woody, earthy, root, smoky, lingering.
Native to India and Indonesia, this thick perennial plant has stiff stems, long narrow leaves and small roots (rhizomes) containing the odoriferous elements.It grows wild but is cultivated in the tropics: Reunion Island, India, Brazil, China, Haiti and Java.
The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the rhizomes, which have been washed, cut in pieces and sun-dried.
Used in woody, chypre and oriental compositions.The essence is used as a preservative in foods, particularly asparagus.
