Rosewood trees grow wild in the Amazonian basin. Rosewood essence is produced in Mexico, Guyana and Brazil.
In the early 20th century, hundreds of tons of essence were produced in these regions. Nowadays authentic rosewood production is limited to small operations in Brazil.
Rosewood is primarily used in upscale fine perfumery. It adds rich and natural character to floral notes. Also yields natural linalool.

Small pieces of wood are macerated in warm water and steam-distilled.
Rosewood or "bois de rose" is used as a generic term worldwide to refer to various woods that smell of linalool (a molecule that emanates a mildly spicy and lemony floral scent).
