Banana is the fruit of the banana tree, which is technically not a tree but an herbaceous plant in the musaceae family, one that can grow to a height of 25 feet. It is cultivated in in warm climates in Asia, South America, Africa and the Caribbean. There are several different varieties: yellow, green and even red.
Essential can not be opbtained from bananas, so the banana note is recreated in the laboratory, particularly with isoamyl acetate, a molecule whose scent has such a strong resemblance to banana that it is known as banana oil.
The banana note is fairly rare in perfumery, but occasionally appears in men’s or women’s fragrances, for a smooth, fruity and green note.
Banana is a popular food item around the world, one which can be consumed fresh, dried or transformed into various puddings, cakes and preserves. While Cavendish is the most common variety, others, includingthose which are eaten as a vegetable, also have their fans.
