Benzoin (Styrax Tonkiniensis)
Category Balsamic
Sweet, vanilla-scented, resinous and balsamic, powdery, milky and spicy.
The benzoin tree is native to Indochina.
The balsam is collected in Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos and Vietnam.
Benzoin of Siam is a resinous balsamic substance excreted by the tree. The latex seeps from incisions made in the bark and outer layers of the trunk. When the benzoin is collected, it is is semi-liquid but rapidly becomes hard and brittle. Raw benzoin of Siam comes in small tear-shaped or pebble-like fragments of an orangey auburn hue. The resinoid is extracted from the raw material, using solvents such as alcohol.
As a perfume fixative, mainly in amber and vanilla notes.
Also used to flavor all kinds of beverages (including coke); vanilla-caramel flavor.
Heals cuts, skin irritations and sore gums. Used externally to soothe chest infections.
Its delicate fragrance helps develop intellectual qualities and strengthens male friendships.
Is used to treat rheumatism, lumbago and blood poisoning.
