Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis)

Category Aromatic

Floral, herbaceous, balsamic, woody, camphoraceous, fruity pear

France is the main producer of lavender, especially in the Haute-Provence, the Drôme and the Vaucluse regions.
Other countries such as Bulgaria, China and Russia also produce it.

Essence of lavender is obtained through steam distillation of freshly cut flowers.

Used in eaux de Cologne, cosmetics, soaps, deodorants and functional perfumery.

Its name comes from the Latin "lavare" (to wash). It was added to bath water in Antiquity. Glovemakers from Grasse who used essence of lavender to scent the leather were spared from the plague; they encouraged their fellow-citizens to wear lavender.

Sachets of lavender give a fresh, clean smell to bed-linen. An antiseptic (for acne), it is also a stimulant, an antispasmodic, an insecticide and healing agent. It relieves headaches and calms the nerves. Lavender is a symbol of purity and tranquility.
