Peru Balsam (Myroxolon Pereirae)

Category Balsamic

Vanilla, caramel, sweet, cinnamic, pharmaceutic.

Peru balsam comes from Central America: El Salvador, Mexico, and Guatemala.

Peru balsam is a natural balsamic resin. The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the balsam, and the resinoid through extraction using volatile solvents. The balsam is an excretion from the trunks of tall trees (up to 45 feet high). It is obtained either from partial burning of the bark, which allows for easy removal, or through wrapping a cloth around incisions made in the bark. The cloth then absorbs the balsam, which is later collected through heating.

A fixative, used particularly with amber, leather and vanilla notes.

It stimulates the heart, increases blood pressure and reduces mucous secretions. Used in treating rheumatism and as a bactericide.
